They call him "The King", and with good reason. Richard Petty has competed in 1,184 races and won 200 of them. Along the way he's claimed seven Cup championships and won seven Daytona 500s.
After debuting in his first NASCAR race in 1958, Petty went on to hold numerous records. He competed in 513 consecutive NEXTEL Cup races and in the process became the sport's first million-dollar driver. In 1973 he was inducted into the North Carolina Athletic Hall of Fame. And to top it all off, he's won the Most Popular Driver Award nine times.
The Petty family, with The King at its head, is racing royalty. Dad Lee Petty drove in the first NASCAR race ever in 1949. As kids, Richard and his brother Maurice traveled a lot with their mom, following their dad's career around the country. Richard Petty's son Kyle and grandson Adam continued the dynasty, both becoming NASCAR drivers.
In 2000 Petty Racing joined with two other legends: Cheerios and Betty Crocker. Together they formed a perfect partnership; and with the addition of Bobby Labonte, the future for both these legends looks brighter than ever.
