While most other five-year-olds were playing tee-ball, future star Bobby was
racing quarter-midgets. Growing up in Corpus Christi, TX, Bobby's racing heroes
were A.J. Foyt, Richard Petty, and his own older brother, Terry Labonte. When
Terry's career took off in 1979, the Labonte family moved to North Carolina to
be closer to him. Bobby's first official job in racing was sweeping the shop
floors for brother Terry's team, Hagan Racing, when he was 19.
Bobby Labonte's behind-the-wheel racing career started in 1990 with his first
full season in the Busch Series. That year he claimed six top-five and 17
top-ten finishes. The next year he won the entire series. For most drivers that
would be the pinnacle of their career; for Labonte, it was just the beginning.
In 1993 Labonte started racing in the NEXTEL Cup series, driving full-time for
Bill Davis Racing. That year he earned one top-five and two top-ten finishes,
along with his first pole. Season after season the all-American Labonte kept
climbing the pecking order. And then came 2000 - the year that Labonte won the
NEXTEL Cup series and the Brickyard 400. That year he and brother Terry became
the first siblings in the family-rich history of NASCAR Cup racing to share
points championships. Then in 2001, Bobby was inducted into the Texas Hall of
Fame.
Seven years on, and with the backing of Petty Enterprises, Labonte is about to
embark on the next chapter in his racing career. The 2007 season was an encouraging one,
as Labonte and the #43 Team put together an impressive showing over the final 10
races of the season, finishing 18th in points. They hope to build upon that momentum
this year, as the team works toward their end goal of putting Labonte and the Legendary
#43 back where they belong - in Victory Lane. With long-time sponsors Cheerios and Betty
Crocker cheering from the sidelines, 2008 is looking like another great season.
Bobby now lives in Trinity, North Carolina with his wife Donna, and their
children Robert Tyler and Madison Elizabeth. He enjoys fishing and attending
Jimmy Buffett concerts. Bobby owns a Quarter-Midget racing track in Salisbury,
NC and started the North Carolina Quarter-Midget Association.
