Preschoolers love to move, whether it’s spreading their wings and flying around like an airplane or dancing up a storm when you crank up the tunes. Playtime can be even more fun and enriching if they get a chance to play with kids their own age. Playing with others helps young children learn social skills and other essentials, such as taking turns.

Here are some good ways to get the playing started:
  • Join a playgroup or start one with some neighborhood kids. If a playgroup isn’t possible, enroll your child in a preschool art, dance, or music class.
  • Set up a simple board game for them and be nearby to help them keep track of whose turn it is and what to do next.
  • Bring out some old clothes and let them play dress-up. Simple items, such as hats, work best for younger kids.

Tips from real parents:
My daughter is a very active 5-year-old. We have neighborhood scavenger hunts where we give the children a picture or word list of things to find. Then we walk the neighborhood together in search of these things.
